At Capital Sky, empowerment is part of who we are, no matter your gender, age or religion. This month, we are proud to announce that Capital Sky has joined Women in Construction Ireland (WICI) as a core member. This is not just a membership; it is a statement of intent, a continuation of our drive to empower women within the construction industry and ensure real change where it is most needed.
Our decision to partner with WICI comes at a crucial time. Recent data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS)paints a worrying picture: over 18,000 women have left the UK construction industry in the past three months, and the total number of women working in the sector is now lower than it was in 2017. These figures represent lost voices, lost potential, and lost opportunity. When speaking to the leadership team here, (which I’m happy to write is very female strong) we found that insight very sad indeed.
Construction is an industry that quite literally builds our future, and yet, for too long, it has struggled to build the diversity and inclusivity that should define modern workforces. The fact that we are losing talented women from the industry, rather than welcoming more in, is something that should deeply concern us all. It is also something we are determined to help change.
Joining Women in Construction Ireland is a natural step forward for Capital Sky. WICI’s work in creating networks, sharing expertise, and empowering women to lead in all areas of construction aligns perfectly with our own mission. For us, this membership is about collaboration and accountability. It’s about standing alongside other industry leaders who are no longer satisfied with talking about progress, we want to see it, measure it, and drive it.
Here at Capital Sky, that commitment to real action is already visible within our own walls. While many women across the country are sadly leaving the construction industry, we are proud to be moving firmly in the opposite direction. How? Well, just two weeks ago we welcomed another woman to our team, a local mother of three who has joined us as our new receptionist. Understanding the challenges faced by working parents, (I’m one too) we offered her a flexible schedule so she can continue to be there for her children while building her career with us.
This is exactly what Capital Sky stands for: genuine support, local opportunity, and family always coming first. It’s not a policy written on paper or a headline for social media or to make this blog article tick the right boxes, it’s how we operate every day. Where others might have overlooked her because of her availability, we saw genuine talent, complete commitment, and the reality of modern working life. That choice that was made to hire her reflects who we are as a company: one that doesn’t just talk about inclusion, but truly lives it.
The recent call from Renee Preston, CEO of Galloway Construction, resonated strongly within our team. Her words were a demand for the industry to stop trying to reinvent new ways of empowering women and instead act, and to strike at the heart of what’s needed. Too often, diversity is treated as a discussion point rather than a deliverable. At Capital Sky, we are determined to turn those conversations into action, through recruitment, support, mentorship, and opportunity. There are no competing brands or businesses regarding this matter, just a supremely important common goal.
Internally, this new partnership has already sparked important conversations across our organisation. It follows a proud moment for our team, when Alexandra and Ailish from Capital Sky were both nominated in the Women in Constructioncategory at the recent National Building and Construction Awards in London. Those nominations were a reflection of the dedication, intelligence, and resilience of the women who are already shaping our success. Joining WICI builds upon that momentum, giving our people access to new resources, shared knowledge, and a platform for visibility within the wider industry.
We recognise that progress is not made overnight, and that representation must be earned through consistent effort and tangible outcomes. But we are committed to being part of the solution. For every young woman considering a future in construction, for every skilled professional feeling overlooked, and for every leader looking to make a difference, we want Capital Sky to be a company that leads by example.
The construction industry is built on foundations, and the most powerful foundation of all is equality. By joining Women in Construction Ireland, Capital Sky is taking another step towards ensuring that women not only have a place in this industry but a voice, a future, and a clear path to leadership.
This is more than a membership. This is a pledge to act, to support, and to empower.
